Most people take a vacation to relax, get away from it all and recharge their batteries. However, after planning the trip, spending your hard earned money and navigating your way through airport security and a country you may have never visited before, unwinding isn’t as easy as simply showing up. Read this article to get some tips on how to actually relax on vacation, whether that be in West Bay Roatan or anywhere else across the globe.
Leave Your Work Behind
This may be easier said than done, but you take time off work because the change of scenery and respite from workday pressures should allow you to return with a new sense of motivation. This may require you to set some boundaries with your workplace and warn people that you won’t be checking in while you’re away. Set your “out of office” message with contact information for someone else to take care of any emergencies. If that’s impossible, set aside a short period of time every other day to quickly go through your email and voice message system and take care of only the most urgent requests.
Try New Things
If it’s your first time at your vacation destination you’ll be immediately surrounded by a bunch of new sights and stimulations. Embrace this. New sensations will allow you to put old stresses behind you, even if only for a while. Try new foods and activities and seek out places that are different from what you’d regularly encounter back home. When your mind is processing new information, your day-to-day burdens will be pushed into the background.
Rest Up
There’s no better way to increase your sense of relaxation than by catching up on your rest. Try going to bed earlier than normal or sleeping in later than your usual wake up time. Linger over delicious Honduran coffee or a meal rather than worrying about rushing off to “get things done.” Spend some time by the pool, ocean or in a park to take in the views and watch the day go by. Although there may be a bunch of things you want to do on your vacation, make sure to set aside time where you have no obligations.
Get Some Exercise
It may seem counterintuitive, but getting some exercise can actually help you relax. Getting your body moving will increase your heart rate and blood circulation, and change your endorphin levels, which will allow you to loosen up even more once you’re finished. You don’t necessarily need to be pumping iron, unless, of course, that’s your thing. Even something as simple as going for a walk, trying a local sport or going out for a night of dancing can help you relax in the end. When it comes to relaxation, there’s a lot to be said about sitting under a sun umbrella, but don’t forget to balance that with something that stretches your muscles.
Do Something You’ve Been Ignoring
Have you been too busy to do things like read a book, knit a scarf or catch up on your journal writing? Vacation is the perfect time to do things you haven’t had time to do while you’re at home. Even mundane activities such as sewing a button on your shirt or transferring recipes from index cards to your computer can promote relaxation.
