What Are the Best Beaches to Explore in Roatan?

If Roatan, Honduras is known for anything, it’s known for some of the world’s greatest beaches.  When you picture in your mind’s eye an iconic beach, it’s typically one of Roatan’s white sand and clear blue, turquoise water beaches that you’re envisioning.  And while the entire island isn’t completely ringed with white sand beaches (there’s plenty of iron shore and mangroves forests,) there’s enough beach here to ensure you can have an entire one yourself if you’re willing to search one out.  To get you started, we answer the question, “What are the best beaches to explore in Roatan?”

Camp Bay Beach

We start this list with one of the more further afield beaches on the island.  And that’s because if you want a massive stretch of white sand beach lapped by crystal clear blue waves all to yourself, this is where you should go.  Camp Bay Beach is on the East End, far from all the tourist action.  However, here you’ll find a mile-long stretch of white sand where you’ll be able to stake out a site without having to worry about noisy and irksome neighbors.  There are also a few options for food and accommodations as this has become a spot known for excellent kitesurfing.  But if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and have an iconic beach mostly to yourself, Camp Bay Beach is the right one for you.

West Bay Beach

West Bay Beach is pretty much the opposite of Camp Bay Beach, but it’s also known as Roatan’s finest beach.  West Bay Beach is a hotspot for the tourist trade and features several resorts, hotels, and restaurants.  But the main attractions here are diving and snorkeling.  With the reef within swimming distance, even a beginner can have a great first-hand experience with the diverse and abundant marine life on show.  For those looking for other water activities, you’ll find all the classics:  jet skiing, parasailing, glass-bottomed boat tours and more. That said, if you’d rather just relax on the beach, it’s large enough that you won’t find it overcrowded or overwhelming.  This is a great spot to simply relax and enjoy the weather.

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is in West End, Roatan and is known for its beautiful beach, variety of water activities and a great location to catch the sunset.  It’s not the biggest beach on the island, so it can become crowded, but there’s a lot to do to keep you and your family occupied here.  There are plenty of restaurants and bars lining the edges of the beach which makes it a great place for a day trip.  If you have the time, it’s definitely one of the Roatan beaches you’ll want to check out.

Mahogany Bay Beach

Mahogany Bay Beach is a man-made beach built near where the cruise ships dock.  It was designed and constructed by the cruise ship company, Carnival.  And while a man-made beach may not sound that appealing, the fact that it’s been custom-made makes it more convenient than many natural beaches.  You can also ride the Magical Flying Chair from the cruise ship terminal directly to the beach.  If you only have a few hours to spend, Mahogany Bay Beach is a perfectly good option.
