Why Plan a Vacation to Roatan Island in Honduras?

Are you looking for a unique tropical island getaway?  Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands off the north coast of the Central American country, Honduras, is slightly off the beaten path making it a hidden gem amongst the more commonly known vacation destinations.  Why plan a vacation to Roatan island in Honduras?  Our list of highlights is designed to convince you to book a trip and experience this beautiful island firsthand.

Diving

If Roatan is known for one thing, it would be scuba diving.  Located on the second largest barrier reef system in the world (the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef,) Roatan is perfectly situated for those who love exploring the ocean depths.  Aside from massive forests of coral (over 70 species) and colorful schools of fish (over 400 species,) divers will regularly come across dolphins, rays, turtles, moray eels, seahorses and nurse sharks.  And if you time it right, you might get a chance to swim with schools of hammerhead sharks or the largest fish in the world, the whale shark.  Not only does Honduras offer a wealth of marine life with almost 200 dive sites, the prices for scuba diving are some of the lowest found anywhere in the world.  If you were always reticent about trying scuba diving because of the price, Roatan is a great place to investigate further.

Snorkeling

You don’t need to be a scuba diver to be able to witness the beauty of the reef system.  Many parts of the reef are within easy swimming distance of the beach.  This allows snorkelers to experience all the marine life the reef has to offer without the need for scuba diving and the courses and certification processes that it entails.

White Sand Beaches

What’s a tropical getaway without white sand beaches?  West Bay, with the longest stretch of easily accessible white sand on the island, is the most popular, but still feels far less crowded than many other well known beaches around the world.  You’ll also have quick access to the barrier reef system as well as all the amenities.  If you’re looking for something more secluded, Marbella Beach, on the north shore, is off the beaten track and offers complete privacy.  Half Moon Bay, in West End, is the opposite – a bustling area full of boats, docks and all sorts of water-based activities.  Camp Bay Beach is located on the island’s East End which is rarely accessed by tourists.  However, every Monday, Roatan expats gather at Camp Bay Beach to celebrate, “Mondays Don’t Suck!”

Gumbalimba Park

Gumbalimba Park is an eco-adventure area that features white faced monkeys, sloths, macaws, iguanas and other wildlife.  Named after a native tree, the 20 acre beachfront park is a family-friendly reserve that offers both adventure and relaxation.  Activities such as zip-lining, kayaking, snuba (a combination of scuba diving and snorkeling) and underwater helmet diving are complemented with nature trails, botanical gardens, dense jungle and beachfront relaxation.  There’s an extensive interactive educational component as well that teaches about the island’s history and culture.
