Should You Visit Roatan In Rainy Season?

Planning your vacation according to weather patterns might be necessary in certain situations.  If you’re going on a ski trip you don’t want to be travelling into the mountains in the middle of a roaring-hot summer.  A hot air balloon trip won’t go ahead on an overly windy day.  And if you’re looking to get a sun tan, sunny skies will be a necessary component of your plans.  However, weather isn’t absolute.  It can still snow in the summer, wind patterns quickly change and the rain can always give way to sun.  Similarly, some wonder whether you should visit Roatan in rainy season.  The fact is, even in Roatan’s rainy season, you’ll still be privileged with long stretches of sunny, warm weather.

Some Roatan Locals Prefer Rainy Season

The fact is that rainy season in Roatan can be quite pleasant.  Locals welcome the slightly cooler temperatures while the precipitation reinvigorates lush, green growth.  The entire rainy season runs from October to January, but temperatures will still average around 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius.) That being said, you don’t have to worry that you’ll be drenched with rain for your entire vacation.  Typically, you might experience showers in the mornings or evenings with mainly sunny days.  You might get a few rainy days in a row, but you might also get a good run of sunny days.  Very rarely will you experience weeks of constant rain.

Unaffected By The Hurricane Path

What you don’t have to worry about on Roatan is hurricane season.  The island is far enough west that it’s located outside of the Hurricane Path.  If a hurricane does land on Roatan, it’s a very rare event, maybe happening once every 25 years or so.  Booking island vacations shouldn’t be affected by the hurricanes that the Caribbean and the Eastern American seaboard are so famous for.

Rainy Weather Activities

Even if it does rain, it’ll be a warm rain.  And some activities, such as scuba diving may not be affected by rain showers.  As long as the wind isn’t too heavy and you’re far enough below the ocean’s surface, scuba divers might not even know it’s raining.  Restaurants, bars and other businesses will still be open to allow you to go about your vacation as you normally would.  Or you can follow the lead of the locals who welcome the rainy season and simply relax.

Low Season Deals

Another advantage of booking a vacation on Roatan during the rainy season is that you may snag yourself a deal.  Mid-September to mid-December is considered the low season.  This can result in lower prices, fewer crowds and a lack of cruise ship day trippers.
