One of the many attractions of going on holidays is escaping the local weather. In the middle of a mid-summer heatwave it’s always great to get out onto the water and allow the ocean breeze to cool you off. Conversely, when your day-to-day outlook is full of snow and freezing weather, jetting off to a tropical climate can make the rest of the winter a little more bearable. What if you’re going on vacation in Roatan? What will the weather be like?
Roatan Average Temperatures
It’s important to realize that the average temperature in Roatan never varies much more than seven or eight degrees Fahrenheit (F), so you’re pretty much guaranteed to experience warm and tropical weather no matter when you visit. Highs range from 82F or 28 degrees Celsius (C) to 90F/32C. Lows will range from 72F/22C to 77F/25C. If it’s warm weather you’re looking for, Roatan is a great place to be regardless of the time of year!
Rainy Season
Despite little variation in temperature, Roatan does experience bigger differences in precipitation. This results in a rainy season and a dry season. Rainy season in Roatan typically runs from the end of spring to late fall with the highest amounts of rain occurring in September and October. This also coincides with the hottest months of the year which can lead to high humidity.
Dry Season
The dry season in Roatan generally runs from early winter to late spring. It also features many of the cooler months of the year. However, for someone who’s experiencing sub-zero temperatures, a cool month in Roatan can seem positively balmy. Early in the dry season, the jungles are still lush and green whereas they start drying out but remain green toward the end.
High Season
When it comes to the number of tourists and travelers visiting Roatan, high season usually starts around mid November, coinciding with American Thanksgiving. It generally runs until the following spring. Many North American travelers like to escape the cold weather and find that a Caribbean island such as Roatan fits the bill for a winter getaway. Although precipitation levels might be lower, the air may be fresher and the jungles lusher and greener, there is a price to be paid for visiting Roatan in the high season. Flights and accommodations are generally more expensive and the more desirable lodgings will be snapped up quickly. This is especially true around Christmas and Easter, so book well in advance if you’re planning to travel then.
Low Season
Low season loosely coincides with the rainy season and runs throughout most of the spring and summer months of the Northern Hemisphere. However, there are several advantages to visiting Roatan in the low season. Lower tourist numbers means cheaper vacation rental rates, more affordable airfare and less crowded beaches. It should also be mentioned that even during the rainy season, there is plenty of sunshine. Rain showers typically occur in short bursts at around the same time each day which makes them somewhat easy to predict. Don’t let the term “rainy season” make you believe you won’t see the sun for your entire vacation!
